But I’ve been wondering: is there any way to tune an engine such that it makes 200 horsepower per liter or greater? Inquiring minds want to know.

Dodge Viper for your time.

the only way to get that kind of HP/l is to either boost the shit out of it or make rev to the friggen moon and back (see: superbike engines)

Kinja'd!!!

That aside, high revving stuff can do it. I think some F1 engines were 300hp/L. Top Fuel is 1200-1300 hp/L.

Honda S2000 used a 2L I4 that made 237 HP at 8300 RPM

Edit: Yeah that’s half. Here’s a Evo that makes 1000 wheel

Easily. Whether or not you have any actual power, though, is in question.

Yes. The last turbo Drake Offenhausers, for one, were a little over 4L and developed in excess of 1000hp. In a four cylinder. Running methanol, IIRC, and able to survive the cylinder pressures for extended periods due to the head-in-block design.

Kinja'd!!!

Blown drag engines on nitrous are way higher still, but only have to survive short runs.

run it on nitromethane.

that is, so long as you don’t expect the engine to last for more than a minute.

N/A? Yes, but expect maintenance galore and zero torque down low. Motorcycle engines frequently approach these numbers.

Yes, even a naturally aspirated one. 800cc MotoGP bikes are making about 240 horsepower or 300 hp per liter.

Forced induction gets you there too. The Kawasaki H2R makes 310HP with .998 liters.

yea, good luck finding one.

or look into liter bikes. BMW’s s1000RR was 200HP from 1l.

Group B had a lot of turbo/super/twincharged fun while beating those numbers, and those cars are technically road legal.

1980s turbo F1 was rumored to be (at least for BMW) over 1000 hp/l, on a production block. (Over 1500 hp in qualifying trim, on a block that had done 60,000 miles or so in a road car, and then was pulled out, got a different head and short stroke rods and crank, and a HUGE turbo, to be a 1.5 liter engine.)

Easy. Make it small, high-revving, and give it forced induction
